We are the Economy

There are a lot of people out there who have developed this insane notion that “the economy” is something which is outside of the control of the average person.  But when it comes right down to it, who really makes or breaks what happens in the economy of our world, anyway?  After everything else is said and done, we the people are what make the economy whatever it is going to be, for better or worse.  What we spend and how much we save are both factors of where our economy is, regardless of what all of the pundits out there may be saying this week.

Consider the fact that in the United States, the economy is almost entirely based on what the consumer is spending their money on.  Since we are the main consumers in this country, we the people are the folks who make the dollar valuable, and make the businesses work to please us.  This creates jobs, which is the cornerstone of our entire economy.  And when you consider how much power the American consumer has wielded since World War II and the era of prosperity its ending ushered in, it is a great thing when we use the money we have for what we really want.

Why do so many people assume that “the consumer” is anybody else but you, and your friends and family?  You are the people who make our entire economy continue to function, no matter what all of the talking heads on TV may be saying.  Their opinions are just that- the opinions of a bunch of people who went to a lot of school, but do not necessarily know more about the economy than anybody else.
